PRESIDENT'S LETTER
TALLAHASSEE Chapter of
National Association of Women in Construction

Message from the President  -  May 2010
Sandra Y. Davis, CIT

Our Chapter held a LEED for Subcontractors workshop on April 16th. Although we had a small attendance, it provided a one-on-one instructional workshop.

Steve Hancock responds …. The LEED workshop was very helpful to me from both a general contractors and a design builders perspective. The course was designed for construction managers and contractors and I thought Amy Stalbosky, LEED AP did a super job of addressing the areas of LEED that effect builders and design builders with regard to bidding LEED projects, identifying LEED requirements and how to document those requirements.

The most valuable information I gained from the workshop is that contractors and design builders involved in a LEED project are at a high degree of risk to obtain the LEED certification because you don’t know if you reach the specified LEED level until the project is complete. I learned the following: (1) that the Owner’s Commissioning Agent will play a major role in the project as this agent could eventually be in a position to make or break the project. (2) that the Owner needs to be heavily involved in the initial stages of the project and the Owner needs to understand that LEED is a Team effort and they need to take their role seriously to include fulfilling financial obligations.

If contractors are involved with LEED projects and intend to get in this market they should have a LEED expert within their company and since our company, Premier Construction and Development, is involved in a LEED project at FAMU I intend to pursue the LEED Green Associate certificate as this is serious business.

I enjoyed the course and I appreciate that NAWIC and the Leon County School District gave the area builders the opportunity to attend this LEED workshop.

Steve Hancock, Construction Manager
Premier Construction and Development

Our Chapter did not have a general meeting this month, however several met and had dinner upstairs at Ray’s Steel City Saloon. Jackie Wilson invited a guest, Susan Grabowski with Tallahassee Kitchen Center.

We did the WIC Week member participation drawing for a $100 Wal-Mart Gift Card. Congratulations goes to Barbara Bergstrom, our Chapter Secretary, who is employed at Poole Engineering & Surveying, Inc.
